Survey-Ergebnisse & Neustart: International Observatory of Performance Manager Survey results & a new start: International Observatory of Performance Manager

For several years, the ICV has supported a joint survey of the Association of Directeurs Financiers and Controle de Gestion DFCG and the Decision Performance Conceil within the framework of international relations with the DFCG. This annual global survey is increasingly involving members of the ICV community.

The formerly called “Management Control Survey” has now been renamed to “International Observatory of Performance Manager”. A document with the latest survey results has been made available to us for publication. The survey focussed on management control activities, in particular the impact of digital transformation on this function and the evolution of this role and business.

The authors of the study write that all their current observations regarding the activities of the management controller / performance manager are consistent with those made in previous years. The numerical participation of experts in budget planning and reporting thus decreases from year to year. However, these experts are still important given the associated (potential, otherwise to be generated) added value. Better relations with the operating units remain their task and opportunity to provide the greatest added value in the future. There are always shorter response times for creating e.g. reports and further development of the budgeting process is in practice already in full swing.

The authors of the study write that digitization in the service of performance managers is more important than so-called collaborative tools: Big Data and Artificial Intelligence are the new digital possibilities for control. Performance managers can use these new tools to strengthen their advisory role, and above all, they can develop their predictive skills, which are increasingly in demand. Beyond the fact that better performance analytics can be created through digitization, performance managers can also work more efficiently themselves, including new analysis tools or automation and robotization (RPA) tools.

Another important point in the digital chapter for performance managers (and for the finance function in general) is the Data Governance Report. Financial management and performance managers need to play a stronger role here.

The survey takes place again this year, now under the new name “International Observatory of Performance Manager”. Once again, the survey will provide insights into trends in the activities, processes, methods, and tools of performance managers. In addition, this year more attention should be paid to:

  • digital transformation and its impact on the performance managers,
  • the “evolution of the performance manager function” and the new skills and competences required.
