Als einer der Gründungsväter des Controllings in Deutschland ist Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Péter Horváth wohl jedem Controller und jeder Controllerin bekannt. Jedoch wissen vielleicht nicht alle, dass das ICV Ehrenmitglied heute, am 3. Februar, seinen 85. Geburtstag feiert. Grund genug, um Péter Horváth öffentlich zu gratulieren und besondere Meilensteine seiner beruflichen Laufbahn noch einmal genauer zu betrachten.
Die akademische Karriere der Finanz-Koryphäe zusammenzufassen, ist herausfordernd, denn auf unzähligen Stationen hat Péter Horváth das Controlling geprägt. 1973 baute er an der TU Darmstadt am Institut für Betriebswirtschaftslehre den ersten Lehrstuhl für Controlling in Deutschland auf. 1981 folgte er dem Ruf an die Universität Stuttgart, an der er bis zu seiner Emeritierung im März 2005 Lehrstuhlinhaber für Allgemeine Betriebswirtschaftslehre und Controlling war.
Natürlich war der gebürtige Ungar auch über die deutschen Landesgrenzen hinaus als Controlling-Papst bekannt. Das 1979 veröffentlichte Standardwerk „Controlling“ ist bereits in der 14. Auflage erschienen und mehrfach übersetzt worden. Hinzukommen mehr als 40 Fachbücher und Zeitschriften wie “Controlling”, “Wissenschaftsmanagement” und “Familienunternehmen und Strategie”, die er als Mitherausgeber verantwortete. Zudem erhielt er die Ehrendoktorwürde zahlreicher ausländischer Hochschulen. So würdigten die Budapester Corvinus-Universität, die European Business School, die Westungarische Universität Sopron sowie die Estnische Universität in Tartu seine wissenschaftlichen Leistungen im Controlling. Über die Jahre haben 85 Hochschulabsolventen bei Péter Horváth promoviert und damit den Grundstein für ihre Karrieren gelegt.
Doch es ist nicht nur die universitäre Laufbahn, auf die er mit Stolz zurückblicken kann. Als Unternehmer hat er sich ebenfalls einen Namen gemacht. Aus der Managementberatung mit Sitz in Stuttgart, die er 1981 gründete, ist mittlerweile ein Unternehmen von Weltruf geworden. „Horváth“ beschäftigt heute etwa 1.000 Mitarbeiter und zählt zu den besten Arbeitgebern Deutschlands. Zudem gilt das Unternehmen als die führende international aktive Managementberatung auf dem Gebiet “Unternehmenssteuerung“.
Erst in diesem Jahr hat sich Péter Horváth als stellvertretender Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender zurückgezogen. Dennoch bleibt er dem Unternehmen eng verbunden: So wurde er zum Ehrenvorsitzenden des Aufsichtsrats ernannt. Auch ein gemeinnütziges Forschungsinstitut hat Péter Horváth 2001 „ganz nebenbei“ gegründet: das IPRI (International Performance Research Institute.
Doch gibt es mehr als nur Zahlen im Leben von Péter Horváth. Er engagiert sich darüber hinaus für die Förderung von Kunst, Wissenschaft und Völkerverständigung. Eigens dafür hat er 2002 die Péter-Horváth-Stiftung gegründet, die Stipendien für die Musikhochschule Stuttgart vergibt, das ungarische Kulturinstitut Stuttgart unterstützt und jährlich den Preis für Nachhaltigkeitsprojekte in der Wirtschaft (“Grünes Controlling”) sowie einen Dissertationspreis auslobt.
Auch in kulturellen Institutionen engagierte er sich: Von 2006 bis 2015 hatte Péter Horváth eine festen Platz im Hochschulrat der Musikhochschule Stuttgart. Zudem war er stellvertretender Vorsitzender des Wirtschaftsclubs im Literaturhaus Stuttgart und der Adolf Hölzel-Stiftung in Stuttgart-Degerloch und Vorstandsmitglied des Freundeskreises im Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Und genauso aktiv ist er auch im Privatleben: 22 Mal absolvierte er den Marathon in New York und auch heute hält er sich noch regelmäßig fit.

As one of the founding fathers of controlling in Germany, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Péter Horváth is probably known to every controller. However, not everyone may know that the ICV Honorary Member is celebrating his 85th birthday today, February 3. Reason enough to congratulate Péter Horváth and to take a closer look at special milestones in his professional career.
Summarizing the academic career of the financial luminary is challenging, because Péter Horváth has shaped controlling in countless areas. In 1973 he set up the first chair for controlling in Germany at the TU Darmstadt at the Institute for Business Administration. In 1981 he accepted the call to the University of Stuttgart, where he held the chair for general business administration and controlling until his retirement in March 2005.
Of course, the native Hungarian was also known beyond the German borders as a controlling pope. The standard work “Controlling” published in 1979 is now in its 14th edition and has been translated several times. In addition, there are more than 40 specialist books and magazines such as “Controlling”, “Wissenschaftsmanagement” („Science Management”) and “Familienunternehmen und Strategie” (“Family Business and Strategy”), for which he was responsible as co-editor. He also received honorary doctorates from numerous foreign universities. The Corvinus University in Budapest, the European Business School, the West Hungarian University of Sopron and the Estonian University in Tartu have all recognized his scientific achievements in controlling. Over the years, 85 university graduates have received their doctorates from Péter Horváth, thereby laying the foundation for their careers.
But it’s not just his university career that he can look back on with pride. He has also made a name for himself as an entrepreneur. The management consultancy based in Stuttgart, which he founded in 1981, has meanwhile grown into a world-renowned company. „Horváth“ employs around 1,000 people today and is one of the best employers in Germany. In addition, the company is regarded as the leading internationally active management consultancy in the field of “corporate management”.
This year Péter Horváth retired as Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Nevertheless, he remains closely connected to the company: He was appointed Honorary Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Péter Horváth also founded a non-profit research institute “quite incidentally” in 2001: the IPRI (International Performance Research Institute).
But there is more to the life of Péter Horváth than just numbers. He is also committed to promoting art, science and international understanding. In 2002 he founded the Péter Horváth Foundation specifically for this purpose, which awards scholarships for the Stuttgart University of Music, supports the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Stuttgart and annually gives the award for sustainability projects in business (“green controlling”) as well as a dissertation award.
He was also involved in cultural institutions: since 2006 to 2015, Péter Horváth had a place on the university council of the Stuttgart Music Academy. He was also Deputy Chairman of the Business Club in the Stuttgart Literature House and the Adolf Hölzel Foundation in Stuttgart-Degerloch and a Board Member of the Friends of the Baden-Baden Festival Hall. And he is just as active in his private life: he completed the marathon in New York 22 times and even today he keeps fit regularly.
