Der ICV im Gespräch mit Vertretern von Heraeus Precious Metals, Gewinner des Green Controlling-Preises 2022: Das ICV Team Kommunikation hat sich mit den frisch gekürten Green Controlling-Preisträgern von Heraeus Precious Metals unterhalten: Stefan Staubach, CFO, Maria Busch, Head of Global Controlling, Reporting & Projects, sowie Christin Sauer, Global Business Controller, stehen Rede und Antwort.
Sie haben die Transformation zur CO2-Neutralität im Bereich Finance gestartet. Warum gerade hier?
Die Finanzabteilung ist dafür prädestiniert, solche Transformationsprozesse anzustoßen. Sie kann es leisten, eine für alle nachvollziehbare und vergleichbare Datengrundlage zu schaffen, große Datenmengen zu bearbeiten, das Ergebnis den Stakeholdern in einfacher Weise zur Verfügung zu stellen und messbare Ziele in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Management zu setzen.
Der Heraeus Konzern ist unter dem Dach der Holding mit 12 Business Units sowie dem weiteren Bereich Start-Ups sehr breit aufgestellt. Greift das Gewinnerprojekt für alle Bereiche oder ist die Business Unit Precious Metals der Pilot?
Die Heraeus Gruppe bündelt diverse Geschäftsbereiche, doch die einzelnen Business Units agieren unabhängig voneinander. Heraeus Precious Metals – als eine der größten Business Units des Heraeus Konzerns – ist Vorreiter und Leuchtturmprojekt in Bezug auf Nachhaltigkeit. Wir stehen jedoch im regen Austausch mit dem gesamten Konzern, damit jede Business Unit von unseren Erkenntnissen profitieren und sich nachhaltiger aufstellen kann.
Was war die Initialzündung für Ihre Bewerbung für den Green Controlling-Preis 2022?
Wir sind sehr stolz auf die bisher erreichten Ziele. Wir wollten uns darüber hinaus auch extern messen lassen. Der anspruchsvolle Green Controlling-Preis erschien uns als eine hervorragende Gelegenheit, diese Bestätigung zu suchen.

…eine sehr große Ehre, da unsere Anstrengungen im Bereich Nachhaltigkeit durch einen so renommierten Preis auch extern gewürdigt werden.
Stefan Staubach, Global Head of Finance, Heraeus Precious Metals
Stefan Staubach verantwortet seit Anfang 2019 den Finanzbereich sowie Beschaffung und Compliance bei der Heraeus Precious Metals. Zuvor war er Leiter der M&A- und Strategieabteilung des Heraeus Konzerns. In seiner früheren beruflichen Laufbahn war Stefan Staubach viele Jahre im Investment Banking und Private Equity in Europa und in den USA tätig. Er hat einen Abschluss als Diplomkaufmann der Handelshochschule Leipzig und promovierte mit einer Arbeit zum Einsatz von internen Verrechnungspreisen.
Maria Busch – Head of Global Controlling, Reporting & Projects, Heraeus Precious Metals
Maria Busch leitet seit Anfang 2022 den Bereich Global Controlling, Reporting & Projects der Heraeus Precious Metals, zu dem das Finanz- und Edelmetallcontrolling sowie das Carbon Footprint Reporting gehören. In ihrer vorherigen, langjährigen Tätigkeit als Senior Legal Counsel im M&A Bereich der Heraeus Holding führte sie zahlreiche internationale M&A Projekte und sammelte fachübergreifende Erfahrungen in allen ein Unternehmen betreffenden Angelegenheiten – neben rechtlichen Aspekten insbesondere Finanzen, strategische Aufstellung, EHS und IT. Maria Busch ist in Deutschland zugelassene Rechtsanwältin und hat darüber hinaus einen Master Abschluss an der University of California, Berkeley erworben.
Christin Sauer verantwortet die Nachhaltigkeitsprozesse im Global Controlling von Heraeus Precious Metals. Hierzu zählt unter anderem die Carbon Footprint Berechnung sowie die kontinuierliche Verbesserung der Nachhaltigkeitsprozesse, wie z.B. der Automatisierung. Christin Sauer startete 2021 in ihrer aktuellen Position und sammelte zuvor mehrjährige Erfahrung im Finance Bereich bei einem der größten Anbieter von Marktinfrastruktur weltweit. Christin Sauer hat einen Hochschulabschluss in Betriebswirtschaftslehre von der Hochschule Würzburg.

The ICV Team Communications spoke to the newly chosen Green Controlling Award winners from Heraeus Precious Metals: Stefan Staubach, CFO, Maria Busch, Head of Global Controlling, Reporting & Projects, and Christin Sauer, Global Business Controller, answer questions.
You have started the transformation to CO2 neutrality in finance. Why here?
The finance department is predestined to initiate such transformation processes. It can create a data basis that is comprehensible and comparable for everyone, process large amounts of data, make the results available to stakeholders in a simple manner and set measurable goals in cooperation with management.
The Heraeus Group is very broadly positioned under the umbrella of the holding company with 12 business units and the additional area of start-ups. Does the winning project apply to all areas or is the Precious Metals business unit the pilot? Die Heraeus Group bundles various business areas, but the individual business units act independently of each other. Heraeus Precious Metals – as one of the largest business units of the Heraeus Group – is a pioneer and flagship project in terms of sustainability. However, we are in lively exchange with the entire group so that each business unit can benefit from our findings and position itself more sustainably.
What was the initial impetus for your application for the Green Controlling Award 2022?
We are very proud of the goals we have achieved so far. We also wanted to be measured externally. The demanding Green Controlling Award seemed to us an excellent opportunity to seek this confirmation.

Stefan Staubach, Global Head of Finance, Heraeus Precious Metals
Stefan Staubach has been responsible for finance, procurement and compliance at Heraeus Precious Metals since the beginning of 2019. Previously, he was head of the M&A and strategy department of the Heraeus Group. In his previous professional career, Stefan Staubach worked for many years in investment banking and private equity in Europe and the USA. He holds a degree in business administration from the Leipzig Commercial College and did his doctorate with a thesis on the use of internal transfer prices.
Maria Busch – Head of Global Controlling, Reporting & Projects, Heraeus Precious Metals
Maria Busch has headed the Global Controlling, Reporting & Projects department at Heraeus Precious Metals since the beginning of 2022, which includes Financial and Precious Metals Controlling as well as carbon footprint reporting. In her previous, long-standing position as Senior Legal Counsel in the M&A area of Heraeus Holding, she managed numerous international M&A projects and gained interdisciplinary experience in all matters affecting a company – in addition to legal aspects, in particular finance, strategic positioning, EHS and IT. Maria Busch is admitted to the bar in Germany and also holds a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
Christin Sauer – Global Business Controller, Heraeus Precious Metals
Christin Sauer is responsible for the sustainability processes in Global Controlling at Heraeus Precious Metals. This includes, among other things, the carbon footprint calculation and the continuous improvement of sustainability processes, such as automation. Christin Sauer started in her current position in 2021 and previously gained several years of experience in finance at one of the largest providers of market infrastructure worldwide. Christin Sauer holds a degree in business administration from the Würzburg University of Applied Sciences.
